This course will cover the relationship between the socialization processes that various forms of media can have and their subsequent influence on certain individuals. While there are arguments for and against the influence of media on violent behavior what cannot be denied is that we are living in an increasing more violent nation. In the 25 years between 1966 and 1991 we had 8 well publicized school shootings. In the 16 years between 1991 and 2007 we have had 29 highly publicized school shootings. So with nine years to go we have already almost quadrupled the number of shootings nationwide. Likewise, other violent crimes, sex assaults, gang related violence is all increasing. This course is for anyone and everyone who wants to learn about violence in our society and how we quite possibly may only be looking at the tip of the iceberg as a new generation of children reach the age of violence. |

This picture of the Virginia Tech shooter (name purposly withheld) will most likely live on in infamy helping to perpetuate the glory sought by most serial killers. Some countries, such as Canada, now ban showing pictures or even mentioning the name of a serial killer on Television specifically to take away the media glamour that they seek. |
